The casting call for RuPaul’s Drag Race UK Season 3 has already closed, and with filming likely to begin some time soon, I thought I’d try offering my opinion on who I believe should be on the BBC Three drag reality show. Last time I did this I managed to get 4 of the biggest contenders, so fingers crossed I can beat it this time!
It takes many different ingredients to make a fantastic RuPaul’s Drag Race UK cake – singers, dancers, comedians, sewers, etc. I’ve picked the yummiest, scrummiest treats for my ultimate Drag Race UK Season 3 recipe, so if these queens don’t put you into a diabetic coma, I don’t know what will!
A given! Despite Veronica Green teasing us about whether she’ll come back for RuPaul’s Drag Race UK Season 3, I’m hungry to see what the Season 2 underdog will deliver next time. Pretty much everything you see Veronica wearing on on the show she made herself – with pretty much 0 experience in having made dresses before!
A lot of people maybe counted Veronica out, but her endearing innocence combined with a year in the spotlight to hone her skills could mean an even fiercer competitor who will walk away with the crown.
Despite not using the term “queen” to describe their drag, Miss Jake deserves to be on this list because they give us something we’ve never seen before, on the scene OR on Drag Race. Self-described as “a paper dragon fish insect thingy”, Miss Jake completely transforms their face to create something beautiful and alien every time.
I think Miss Jake would be a welcome addition to RuPaul’s Drag Race UK Season 3, mixing it up and showing the UK (and the world) that drag can come in so many different forms – not just your typical female illusion. Not only that, but Miss Jake is no stranger to a sewing machine, so you know they’ll bring you couture every time!
A wonderfully unique Manchester-based queen whose 60’s-inspired, pastel-skinned, retro sunglasses-wearing alien drag creation is unlike anything we’ve ever seen before. Her quirky YouTube videos are like taking a hit of acid before falling face-first into your nan’s past, which really is a lot more enjoyable than it sounds!
She’s hilarious, she’s wonderfully weird and her looks belong on display in the V&A, so seeing what she would bring to RuPaul’s Drag Race UK is more than I could ever ask for.
A Scottish drag artist and club kid who absolutely stunned me with the most surreal looks and beautifully painted makeup. Self-taught, Sleepy honed her make-up skills when her Chronic Fatigue Syndrome impacted her ability to do other things; an illness she has cheekily nodded to in her drag name.
In the past, RuPaul has made comments about not letting women compete, but not allowing cis female Sleepy onto RuPaul’s Drag Race UK Season 3 would be a huge shame. I know she would blow our minds with what she creates in the ball challenges and she’d delivery a gorgeously unique face every time.
I saw Gisele at Dalston Superstore some years back and ever since I have been obsessed. My favourite thing about Gisele is how she can do it all – weird, glamour, artistic, retro, beauty… it’s all there. Pretty much everything you see on Gisele is self-made; the talent is really limitless.
A performer and self described “creative chameleon”, and part of the creative team at make-up brand Give Face Cosmetics, her Instagram is chock full of the most eyegasmic looks you could ever want. I just know she’d wow us every time she walked out onto the RuPaul’s Drag Race UK main stage.
Pronounced why-she-black, Yshee is known to many around the UK for hosting the PopBuzz Drag Race UK Yearbook… and many others for being a loud mouth star on the rise! She’s also known for hosting the Church of Yshee, famed for being one of the most inclusive drag competitions in the UK.
Yshee Black is a staple in the Birmingham drag scene and was offered her first drag residency before even knowing how to paint her face, a real testament to her ability to entertain. A true comedy queen, Yshee would have us clutching our sides from laughter as I’m sure our favourite church aunty would absolutely destroy the reading challenge and Snatch Game.
Another Birmingham queen, Black Peppa gives face and body in everything they deliver. They can dance, they can turn a fierce look and everything they produce looks like it belongs on the cover of Vogue.
Black Peppa has a background in liberal arts and you can tell, because everything they give us is a production; there’s theatre, there’s choreography, there’s props, there’s backup dancers. Any queen competing against Black Peppa in a dance challenge or lip sync on RuPaul’s Drag Race UK had better watch out.
One of my favourite things about Oxygen is that she isn’t afraid to experiment with her style of drag. A lot of queens you can easily fit into a category – beauty, weird, creative, comedy – but Oxygen refuses to be defined. One minute she’s super glam, then she’s cartoony, then she’s dripping in blood… a true versatile queen – my favourite type!
This would make for really interesting television, because you’d never be able to predict just what she’d bring to the main stage of RuPaul’s Drag Race UK which, in my most-sought-out opinion, makes for really interesting TV.
A queen with looks rooted in traditional glamour (but with a twist), Starlet is one of the most beautiful creatures to ever grace my Instagram feed. How she can go from looking like a 12 year old boy to a beautiful Hollywood starlet (get it?) is beyond me!
She comes from an art school background and this is clear when you look at the intricacies of her look. It’s not just a beautiful face or a gorgeous outfit, but a carefully curated look from head-to-toe that would have us gagging every time she turned the corner of the RuPaul’s Drag Race UK main stage.
No stranger to being on TV, having taught dancing on SkyTV’s Rob & Romesh Vs, Cara is the Beyoncé of London, with gorgeous, flexible legs all the way up to her armpits and sex appeal that could make any many weak at the knees.
Not that I would want any of these queens to end up in the bottom two of RuPaul’s Drag Race UK Season 3, but if she did, I’d honestly pity whichever queen went up against her. You just know Cara is a lip sync assassin that would wipe the floor with any competitor.
Many of us knew Villanelle from way back when, as – in a previous incarnation – she was one of the few queens on YouTube showing us how it was done. Having taken a break from drag for a bit, this hunky Geordie was reborn as Villanelle, a true fashion-inspired couture queen who might just kill you with her looks.
Not only is the make-up more beautiful than it’s ever been, but Villanelle stormed back onto the scene with a complete arsenal of looks that I know could see her stampeding her way to the end of RuPaul’s Drag Race UK Season 3.
Me the Drag Queen
Not me, but Me! Known as The Mother of Drag in London, Me has created multiple platforms for up-and-coming queens to showcase their work. She has hosted, performed and entertained religiously, with her name almost becoming synonymous with London drag.
Her overly exaggerated make-up contrasted against beautiful couture gowns would be sure to delight the judges of RuPaul’s Drag Race UK Season 3. Much like her time on TV show Drag Queens of London – featuring Drag Race UK Alumni Baga Chipz – she would entertain and capture the hearts of the nation.
One of my oldest, oldest, oldest friends (remember the dinosaurs, Daisy?), you may think this is nepotism at its finest – and it is! – but Daisy has forever been one of my favourite queens to see at the club. Her looks are camp, there’s a storyline and she always makes for a good time. There’s never, ever a dull moment when Daisy’s around and she would make for great telly!
A professional seamstress, she’s another queen that would absolutely destroy a sewing challenge. But don’t put this queen in a box – unless it’s a coffin – because that Australian charm comes through in her performances too. If she ever takes the leap to RuPaul’s Drag Race UK, the rest of you queens had better beware.
And that’s it, my top 13 queens that I’d love to see on RuPaul’s Drag Race UK Season 3! Did your favourite queen make the list? Let me know down below if you agree, or if there’s someone else you’d love to see on the show.
